Veteran Detroit Red Wings forward Steve Yzerman leapfrogged Mario Lemieux into eighth place on the NHL’s all-time scoring list Friday.

Yzerman scored in the first period of Detroit’s 3-2 overtime loss at home against the Chicago Blackhawks to collect his 691st career goal and move past Lemieux, now owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The goal was Yzerman’s 13th this season, and the Detroit captain extended his scoring streak to seven games (four goals and five assists).

Yzerman, 40, also has Edmonton Oilers great Mark Messier (who ranks seventh with 694 career goals) in his sights. Mike Gartner sits sixth in the all-time rankings with 708 goals.

“He doesn’t really talk about his accomplishments too much,” Detroit goalie Chris Osgood said about Yzerman, who didn’t speak to reporters after the game. “He seems to be getting better and better for the playoffs.”

A veteran of 21 NHL seasons, all with the Red Wings, Yzerman helped Detroit win two Stanley Cups (1997-98 and 2001-02) and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP in 1998.
